The Sad Tale of How they Disappeared Molly

You may have noticed that Molly Norris’ comic is not in the paper this week. That’s because there is no more Molly.
The gifted artist is alive and well, thankfully. But on the insistence of top security specialists at the FBI, she is, as they put it, “going ghost”: moving, changing her name, and essentially wiping away her identity. She will no longer be publishing cartoons in our paper or in City Arts magazine, where she has been a regular contributor. She is, in effect, being put into a witness-protection program—except, as she notes, without the government picking up the tab. It’s all because of the appalling fatwa issued against her this summer, following her infamous “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day” cartoon.

They are winning by dictating when and how we use our Constitutional protections. Who will have the guts to tell them to take a chill pill and get on with life and, BTW, we jail people for communicating death threats….

Not thinking they will be anyone, or importance, to do this.

I call BS here. Stop and think of twenty ways an author could continue to publish safely while hiding. Like passing the work through intermediaries, mailing it in anonymously, posting through proxy sites, etc. If this author’s work is all that important, wouldn’t it make particularly good sense to continue to publish that way?

Hey..great idea, Steve. If you have something to say that the others decide is inflammatory, then just become an undercover mole and find CIA like resources to continue to use your Constitutional Right to free speech. Not everyone can afford such resources, and even if they could, no one should make them.
